The Agriculture Development Bank, (ADB) has presented some fishing equipment to the Ministry of Fisheries and Aqua Culture Development to help fisher folks who were recently hit by tidal waves.

It was reported that violent tidal waves swept through parts of the coast in the Greater Accra and the Volta regions, leaving in their trail damage to the livelihoods of more than 300 fishermen.

The waves conspired with a violent storm to destroy homes, fishing boats, outboard motors, fishing nets and other equipment of the fishermen in the affected communities. The communities included Bortianor, Kokrobite and Jamestown in the Greater Accra Region and Fuveme in the Volta Region.

Managing Director ADB, Daniel Asiedu said that it is the responsibility of the bank to help distress fishermen.

“The items which we are informed got damaged or lost included outboard motors, fishing nets, ropes, canoes and boats. We are also informed that fishermen from Ada, Bortianor James Town and Teshie were the most affected by this natural disaster,” he said.

“It is in this vein that the ADB Limited which is committed to the financing and development of the agricultural sector of  the economy presents to the Ministry—bundles of  fishing nets for distribution to fishermen in the affected communities,” he added.

He stated that bank management of the bank was touched by the news, hence decided to come to the aid of the fisher folks. “We once again wish to reiterate the commitment of the ADB to support our cherished farmers and fishermen through the provision of credit and other facilities,” he said.

Sherry Ayitey, the sector minister, thanked the bank for responding to their call to support the fishermen. She added that it is high time the nation’s best fisherman is presented with a three-bedroom fully furnished home like it is done for the national best farmer.
